صبر کا اصل معنی روکنا اور قید کرنا ہے ۔ انسان کا خود کو تکلیف کی حالت میں شکوہ کرنے ، اور ہاتھوں سے چہرے کو پیٹنے اور کپڑوں کو پھاڑنے سے روکنے کو’’صبر‘‘ کہتے ہیں۔ اللہ تعالی کا فرمان ہے:
واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم
(الكهف : ۲۸)“اور اپنے آپ کو ان لوگوں کے ساتھ روکے رکھئے جو اپنے رب کو پکارتے ہیں ۔”
